The Department of Media and Communications focus is the interconnections of media, cultural and communicative practices at a local and global level, with the location of the Alpen-Adria-Universitaet, at the intersection of three countries, playing a decisive role. It offers a BA in Media & Communications, a MA in Media, Communication & Culture, and in Media and Convergence Management (in English), and a PhD.
In 2005, it organized the 1st AAU Cultural Studies Conference “The Landscapes of Cultural Studies” on “borderlands” and “diaspora”. The Department also organized the “Symposium on Property, Aestheticization and Global Cultural Studies” in 2011 and the “BLCU International Forum 2009: Global Media & Cultural Studies” in Shanghai.
mk-ARTE, an art initiative founded by the Department hosted expositions such as “Migration. A poverty trap?”, “This really happend here”. The next rendez-vous will be on July 2013, when the Summer Institute of the Association for Cultural Studies 2013 will meet to work on “The Sights/Sites of Cultural Studies”.
The Department of Media and Communications will contribute content to the Performigrations Art-Installation, especially on the cultural dimensions of narratives of migration in relation to borderlines places and diaspora.
It will work in synergy with the “Ingeborg Bachmann Literaturtage” to: select artists representing Austria to implement the Art-Installation; co-host the Art-Installation in Klagenfurt (July 2015); organise the related cultural event (series of readings/Performances); serve in the project Scientific Committee; monitor and assess activities; support project fundraising and promotion at a local & international level.
